About the drive
Neelkanth Mahadev sits at 1,330 metres on a ridge above Rishikesh, about fifty-five kilometres and two hours from Haridwar. The temple marks the spot where Shiva is said to have swallowed the poison churned from the ocean, turning his throat blue — hence the name — and it is one of the most visited shrines in the region after the Char Dham themselves.
The drive is much of the pleasure. The road climbs from Ram Jhula through the forest of Rajaji National Park in a series of hairpins, with the Ganga valley opening up behind you and troops of langurs along the verges. It is a good road but a winding one, and anyone prone to travel sickness should sit in front.
Most guests run this as a half-day from Haridwar or Rishikesh with the car waiting, returning in time for the evening aarti. Mondays and the month of Shravan are extremely busy; we will suggest an early start on those days or a weekday visit instead.
