About the drive
Auli is 280 kilometres from Haridwar, about nine hours along the Alaknanda through Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Chamoli to Joshimath. From Joshimath you can drive the winding road up to Auli or, far better, take the 4.1-kilometre ropeway — among Asia's longest of its kind — which climbs through ten towers with the valley dropping away beneath you.
We break the drive rather than doing it in one push, usually with a night at Joshimath, which doubles as the gateway to Badrinath. That makes Auli easy to combine: a Badrinath darshan and two nights in the meadows work beautifully as one trip, and many guests do exactly that.
What you get at the top depends on the season. January to March is skiing, with instructors and gear available for complete beginners; April to June trades the snow for green meadow and wildflowers with the same view of Nanda Devi, Kamet and Trishul filling the horizon. We plan the ropeway for early morning, since cloud in these valleys builds reliably from about eleven.
