About the drive
Gangotri is 290 kilometres from Haridwar, nine to ten hours up the Bhagirathi valley past the Tehri reservoir, through Uttarkashi and the apple orchards and wooden houses of Harsil. In our view it is the most beautiful road on the entire Char Dham circuit, and we pace it for stops rather than speed.
We break the drive at Uttarkashi or, better if rooms are available, at Harsil — an army town at 2,600 metres that most guests wish they had booked two nights in. From there Gangotri is a comfortable morning's drive, leaving the afternoon for the temple, Bhagirath Shila and the walk down to Surya Kund and Gauri Kund where the river drops through carved rock into turquoise pools.
For trekkers, the glacier snout at Gaumukh is nineteen kilometres from Gangotri through Chirbasa and Bhojbasa and needs a forest permit and at least two days. We arrange permits, guides and porters for anyone keen, though most guests are entirely content with the temple and the valley.
