About the drive
The road to Kedarnath ends at Sonprayag, about 240 kilometres and eight to nine hours from Haridwar through Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Guptkashi. From Sonprayag a shared local jeep covers the last five kilometres to Gaurikund, and from there it is a sixteen-kilometre trek to the temple at 3,583 metres.
Almost nobody books this as a simple one-way drop, and we would advise against it. The sensible way is a three or four-day trip where we hold your stay at Guptkashi or Sonprayag so you start the climb rested, arrange your pony, palki or porter in advance at agreed rates, and time your departure for a quieter darshan. Helicopter shuttles from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi can be added subject to weather and availability.
The vehicle carries oxygen canisters, a basic medical kit and warm layers throughout, and the same driver stays with you for the whole trip. Yatra registration and the biometric pass are completed before you travel, so there is no queueing at the checkpoint.
