About the drive
Chopta is 215 kilometres from Haridwar, seven to eight hours through Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath, and it is the quietest genuinely spectacular place we drive to. There is no town — just a scatter of huts and lodges at 2,700 metres on a ridge of meadow and rhododendron forest, with the Chaukhamba massif on the horizon.
It is the base for two of Uttarakhand's best short treks. Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 metres, is a paved three-and-a-half-kilometre climb that most reasonably fit walkers manage in two hours. Another one and a half kilometres of steeper ground takes you to Chandrashila summit at 4,000 metres, where the panorama runs from Nanda Devi across Trishul, Kedar Dome and Chaukhamba.
Nearby, Deoria Tal is a small lake about two and a half kilometres above the village of Sari, and on a still morning the entire Chaukhamba range reflects in it — one of the most photographed views in Garhwal, and worth the early start. Chopta combines naturally with Kedarnath, since Ukhimath sits on the same road.
