About this journey

This four-day trip pairs India's oldest national park with the reserve that starts on Haridwar's own doorstep. Jim Corbett, established in 1936 and the launch site of Project Tiger in 1973, holds one of the densest tiger populations anywhere in the world — roughly 250 across the wider reserve — along with Asiatic elephants, leopards, sloth bears, four species of deer and over 600 bird species across 520 square kilometres of core park. Rajaji, ninety minutes away near Haridwar, adds elephants, leopards and a very different riverine forest.

With Corbett, the zone you get matters more than anything else, and this is where advance booking earns its keep. Dhikala is the classic — a grassland plateau deep inside the park, forest rest houses, overnight permits only, and the best chance of open-country tiger and elephant. Bijrani mixes grassland and sal forest with excellent sightings and easier access from Ramnagar. Jhirna and Dhela stay open year-round. Durga Devi is hilly and riverine and the best of them for birds. We book zone permits the moment the window opens rather than taking whatever is left.

Safaris run twice daily in open jeeps with a licensed guide and a park naturalist — early morning, which is the productive one, and mid-afternoon. We hold rooms at a resort along the Kosi river close to the gate, because being an hour away at five in the morning is how people miss the best hour of the day. For larger groups the canter bus into Dhikala is a good, considerably cheaper alternative that we are happy to arrange instead.

The Rajaji leg is the pleasant surprise for most guests: a dawn jeep safari through the Chilla or Motichur ranges, fifteen minutes from Haridwar, with wild elephant herds along the Ganga and a real chance of leopard, with a fraction of Corbett's vehicles. The Corbett core is open mid-October to mid-June and closed through the monsoon. November to February gives comfortable days and superb birding; March to June is hot but produces the best tiger sightings as animals concentrate at the shrinking water.
